On my run this morning, as I often do during my runs, my thoughts turned to gratitude. I began mentally listing the things I'm grateful for, and at the top of that list was my health. As I continued, noting other blessings in my life, a thought struck me: What about the times when my health isn't at its best? What about the challenges, the moments that aren't so easy to be grateful for?
I realized that by only acknowledging the positives, I was missing out on something important. In focusing solely on what’s good, I was unintentionally setting myself up for failure and increased suffering. After all, life is a mix of ups and downs—challenges are inevitable.
If I only express gratitude for the "good" moments without recognizing that difficulties are a natural part of life, then when those challenges inevitably come, they hit harder. This is where the practice of equanimity becomes essential.
Equanimity allows us to face both opportunities and challenges with a calm and balanced mindset. It helps us accept the moment as it is, without being carried away by our thoughts or emotions. Instead of resisting difficult moments or clinging to good ones, we create clarity and focus, which helps us navigate whatever life brings.
By practicing equanimity, we strengthen our resilience. We connect with an inner sense of stability that supports us through life's rough patches. When we can remain centered in the face of both joy and hardship, we reduce our suffering and gain the strength to face each moment with greater clarity.
So, how might you apply equanimity to a current challenge in your life?
